For anyone hoping to start a career as a social media strategist (or for anyone wanting to understand what a social strategist actually is!) Mashable have created a brilliant info graphic where they compared LinkedIn data with job listings for positions available within Social Media.
As a social media monitoring company, one of the aspects of the info graphic that we found the most interesting was the disparity in the responsibilities that strategists actually had and those that were advertised in job descriptions.
There were a number of responsibilities that social strategists said that they had but that were much less likely to be advertised in job descriptions. For example developing strategies and monitoring competitors. However there were also responsibilities that were regularly advertised in job descriptions but largely found not to be part of a strategist’s life.
The biggest disparity was in the responsibility for measuring and reporting on ROI – 74% of job descriptions cited this as an essential part of the job, yet from LinkedIn data, it appeared that only 16% actually carried this out.
Here at Media Measurement we are well aware of the difficulties in measuring and monitoring social media and in understanding its ROI; however there are tonnes of methods that can help with this. Not only do companies like ours offer social media evaluation services, but we can also help you access some of the many free tools out there that you can get your hands on. Don’t believe us?
