Love Island 2018: Sun, Sex and hard-as-nail Parents
Cast your mind back to the joy of the 4th of June 2018…
England were gearing up for what was predicted to be a disappointing trip to Russia; we all pondered whether May’s glorious sun was the best we were going to get all summer; and every night at 9pm we sat at home twiddling our thumbs and pondering life’s great questions, such as, are eyebrows considered facial hair??
But that was all about to change…
Boom! Twelve sexy singletons and their unrealistic ideals of beauty waltzed into a villa in Majorca and suddenly our summer had meaning again, as the summer of love began to sizzle on our screens.
This year’s series of Love Island has been a eight week rollercoaster of rejection, heartbreak, awkward chat-up lines, loyalty and most importantly – bits.
So as the nation’s favourite summer pastime comes to a close tonight, we here at Media Measurement decided to turn to social media to predict the winner and explore some other cheeky facts.
Josh and Kaz

It’s been a rough ride for Josh Denzel. Not only did he have to put up with being in a couple with Georgia for two weeks, he also had all the girls at Casa Amor declare their attraction to him…poor chap. There was only one girl though who caught his eye, 23-year-old make-up artist, Kazimir Crossley.
Unfortunately, the loyal ghost of Georgia still haunts their relationship, as her name appeared loud and proud in our word cloud.
Wes and Megan

After a fling with Laura, nuclear and electrical engineer Wes Nelson found himself in the arms of plastic surgery connoisseur, Megan Barton-Hanson. The couple have appeared in the bottom three several times and were the outsiders with the bookies to win the coveted Love Island prize at the beginning of the week. Despite an arduous journey through the villa in which love prevailed, the combination of Wes’ huge ego and Megan’s dry and witless personality saw their popularity plummet. However perception has begun to change and after a visit from the parents, many are predicting a second place finish for these young whippersnappers.
Paul and Laura

Poor Laura… always the Bridesmaid. After two separate boys had their heads turned whilst with her, it seemed like there was a curse put on the dear girl. However her prince charming eventually came in the form of carpenter turned model, Paul Knops. Despite Laura’s seething jealousy almost getting the best of her when Paul revealed he had kissed none other than Britney Spears, the couple have gone from strength to strength, proving that it was just Wes and Jack who were toxic (sorry) as Paul re-coupled with Laura one more time (not sorry).
Based on this word cloud Paul still has some competition in the form of Jack, while in a shock turn of events the word ‘insecure’ appears in relation to Laura…
Dani & Jack

Finally we come to TV’s very own modern day Romeo and Juliet, Jack and Dani. These two hit it off from the start and have become a firm viewer favourite due to their jovial yet cute relationship. Jack, a pen salesman by trade, has managed to woo over Dani, who… well is basically just Danny Dyer’s daughter. The couple are 8/1 at the bookies to take home the Love Island crown and I personally have been backing these cheeky chappies since the start!
All other couples are mainly mentioned by 21-24 year olds, but Jack and Dani also have a strong 25-34 following, suggesting that their relationship is more mature, real and appeals to a greater audience.
Jack & Dani have a strong following from the 25-34 year old category, not just from 21-24 year olds.
Individual Weekend Highlights: The build up to the Final…
It’s crunch time and with time running out to vote, fans cannot help but share their votes on social media…just like Adam couldn’t help breaking hearts!
Social media budding influencer, Lottie, gained over 8,300 likes and 992 retweets on her tweet, showing a strong level of support for Jack and Dani.
Twitter enthusiast @pjkatiee, gained more likes and retweets than she could have imagined when she received over 20k likes and 2,703 retweets for this post about Dani Dyer and her ‘ageing brudda’. These levels of engagement with posts relating to Jani suggest that they are going to win tonight when compared with other candidates engagement rates.
Kaz & Josh certainly divide opinion, some people think they are more smug then a cat who got the cream, while others can’t understand why people aren’t backing them for the win.
And then there are those who can’t belive Kaz’s mum is so sassy…
Wegan survived the parents test with flying colours, but doubts have been raised on social media about the legitimacy of Wes’ Dad’s reaction.
While many viewers were unsurprised by the comments of Megan’s brother…
While others believe there is hope for the couple, with this Tweet gaining 308 likes! That’s more times than Megan has smiled in 2018…
Laura and Paul are on a high after their parents got on like a house on fire…..oh apart from Laura’s dad acting like a 18th century father desperate for a man to wed his daughter….
Laura has arguably had the hardest journey on the show, which has endeared many fans to her cause #MeToo
While some users have expressed their opinions on how boring Paul and Laura are (surely they can’t be worse than Dr Alex, the man has as much personality as a wooden spoon).
Mentions and Share of Voice charts – The Conclusions
Graphs detailing the Share of Voice each couple has received over the last week (top) and their total mentions (bottom).
When examining Share of Voice over the past week it suggests that Jack and Dani are on their way to Love Island glory. Predicting second place maybe slightly more tricky, with Kaz and Josh battling it out with cheeky Wegan for the 2nd place position. The large decline since the 27th for Kaz & Josh would suggest though that Wegan have a march on them, while Paul and Laura have slowly declined since the 23rd of July, suggesting that we as people do get more boring with age (I know my friday’s have changed from partying to reading the latest Argos catalogue…)
So to conclude, 2018 was the year of Jack & Dani. As the final episode airs tonight we can all be forgiven for not believing that any other result is possible, but then again, if love were predictable, I could be blamed for not having a girlfriend right now…
As we all prepare for another long wait until more Love Island with tears pouring from our eyes, we can all question whether we can find love like Jack and Dani.
I leave you with these words in true Love Island style,…”Who are you going to couple up with in 2018?!?”, and if you are already in a couple, in the words of Wes “you’re happy, but could you be happier?”, I’ll leave you to argue that one out later.
“You know me babez, I’m so loyal.”
But hold on a sec, it wouldn’t be a Love Island blog without mentioning G. Georgia’s experience was on the whole good, she walked out the villa with Sam Bird and if Love Island After Sun is to be believed, has blossomed with him on the outside, with Sam even meeting her Mum.
Undoubtedly the story of the villa so far was Georgia and her battle to remain loyal, with the words “I’m loyal, I’m real and I’m me”, echoing round the villa more often than Eyal got philosophical. The below graph shows the climb and decline since leaving the villa of Georgia and the word loyal on social media….clearly the great British public haven’t been loyal to the ‘”l” word since Georgia’s departure!
